Under the crooked yew, Bramble polished the left silver button on his cape until it smelled faintly of mint and old rain. He had brought it from Uncle Quill’s coat box, where a note said, For first greetings only. Tonight, Bramble wanted to raise his hand when the moon slid over the R.I.P. stone and say hello to the whole quiet cemetery. His knees made a soft knock-knock inside his trousers, but his grin stayed put.
A walnut-sized bat named Fidget hung from a branch, upside down and nosy. “When the button shines, you wave,” Fidget squeaked. Bramble lifted his hand. The button caught the moonlight, bright as a wink. From the tree, six bats popped awake and began humming, “Brrr-bip! Brrr-bop!” Fidget flapped in circles, taking Bramble’s little wave for the start of a very serious, very silly concert.
So Bramble waved again, slower this time, and the bats changed tempo. The R.I.P. stone became a drum, the bare branches clicked like spoons, and Bramble’s first greeting turned into a moonlit band practice. If you spot his shiny cape button, keep watch: it may be waiting for one more knock-knock wave.
