Under the porch roof, Zadie tucked a paper treat bag beneath the step and rose onto one toe. The bag was plain, brown, and wrinkled, but she had carried it to every October dance because it made the finest shiff-shaff sound when she spun. Leaves scratched along the boards. The jack-o’-lantern smelled warm and sugary where its candle had kissed the lid.
Zadie swept her arms wide for the bat-tutu whirl she had saved all week. Shiff-shaff, went the bag. Shiff-shaff-shiff! A ghost bobbed from the railing, three bats dipped past the smiling moon, and even the spider stopped halfway down its web as if hanging from an invisible balcony.
Then the bag applauded before Zadie moved. Pop! Pop! Pop! Out bounced tiny candy wrappers, clapping their folded corners together. “Encore?” squeaked one peppermint twist. Zadie laughed so hard her next turn wobbled into a perfect, silly hop. Joy crowded the porch until there was no room for quiet. If you spot that crinkly bag hiding near the step next time, listen for the finest shiff-shaff sound.
