From the bench, the grass smelled wet and silver, and Ezran kept rubbing the brass arcade token in his glove. He only wanted it tucked inside his sock before the final kickoff, where it had lived since his first backyard boot with Uncle Ray. Then—plink—the token slipped out, bounced off his cleat, and rolled under the little black tee near the far hash marks.
No one saw. That was the secret part. Ezran jogged out alone while the band thumped like a giant heart and the stadium lights made every yard line glow. The tee was cold and rubbery in his fingers, but when he lifted it, the token was gone. A ball boy whispered, “Your foot nudged it into the grass.” Ezran found it shining beside the tee, but the whistle blew before he could hide it.
So he held the token in his kicking hand, stepped back, and ran. His cleat smacked the ball with a deep whump, and for one bright second he knew every stripe, post, teammate, and shout belonged around him. Later, back on the bench, the token warmed in his sock again; see if you can spot the little tee that kept his secret.
