Under a sky where Earth looked like a blue coin, Kira lowered her three landing feet onto the Whisper Plain and listened. She wanted the plain’s secret before sunrise, when the mission bell would call her home. In her window sat a smooth river stone from her first launch day, ordinary except that it always felt cool, even near the engines. The ground ticked softly: tik, tik, tik, as if pebbles were counting.
Kira waited. Other rockets had bounced, skidded, and left dents in the dust, but she kept still while the cold crept through her metal toes. At last the river stone rolled off the sill, clinked against the floor, and pointed toward a ring of buried crystals. “So that’s your whisper,” Kira said. She pressed each foot down gently, not harder, and the crystals sang a low silver note instead of crumbling.
From then on, rockets were given wide, patient landing pads, made to listen before they leaped. Ever since, when a rocket rests on round feet among stones, it is waiting for the ground to finish its quiet tik, tik, tik.
