🎨 How to color it

Color the cleanup shirts sunny yellow and sea-glass blue, the reusable bags canvas tan, the Earth Day sign leafy green, and the sailboat bright red against pale aqua waves. Use sharp colored pencils for the sign letters, shirt words, shell ridges, and scattered trash, then switch to smoother side-strokes for the wide sand and sky. Try making every piece of litter a dull gray or brown so the shells, clouds, and helpful kids look extra bright.

The story behind this coloring page

By the tide’s hush-hush edge, Faye pressed a shell to her ear and invented a game she called Still-Until-Sparkle. She wanted to fill her reusable bag before the gulls finished arguing over the pier, but there was a catch: she could only pick up a can, wrapper, or carton after the sun flashed on it. Her friends groaned. The sand smelled salty and warm, and the little waves kept sliding in with a shhh, as if they were in on the secret. “Wait for the wink,” Faye whispered.

For a long while, nothing happened. A sailboat crept across the water. Clouds puffed past. Then—blink!—a bottle cap shone beside a shell. Blink! A crumpled carton winked near a footprint. Faye dropped two beach leaves beside the cleanup sign each time the game worked: one for waiting, one for finding. By noon, the bags were heavy, the strand looked washed in gold, and everyone wanted the patient game.

So that is why Earth Day cleanup signs have carried two leaves ever since. If you spot them, remember Faye’s secret: the beach gives its best clues to the ones who can wait for the wink.
