Under the big umbrella, Vina tapped her tiny silver spoon on the towel: ting, ting. She wanted one last cherry for her ice cream mountain, because the spoon had a secret scratch shaped like an arrow. If she held it flat, it pointed past the buckets toward the snack cart.

The sand went hot-pop under her feet. A gull yelled, “Mine?” Vina hid the spoon in her fist and traded her last purple shell for a cherry. By the time she hurried back, one scoop had dripped down the cone like a slow white river.

But the spoon had not been pointing to cherries. It had led her to the cart’s bell, where the vendor had hung a note: FREE SPRINKLES FOR SECRET FINDERS. Vina sprinkled stars on top and whispered, “You knew.” Next time you spot that tall cone, see if the little cherry looks like it is keeping the secret too.
