🎨 How to color it

Color the volleyball in bright white and sunny yellow, the tall palm leaves in deep green, the ocean in turquoise, and the kids’ shorts in coral and sky blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the tight net squares, then switch to broader strokes for the sand, sea, and big palm fronds. Try making the ball the brightest spot on the page, with a pale golden glow around its curved motion lines.

All afternoon, Reva counted bumps in the warm sand: one, two, three, never four. She had set herself a quiet challenge—keep the ball dancing over the rope net until the sun touched the water. Each miss made a soft pff in the sand, and each try tasted like salt on her lips. The old palm beside the court only rustled, as if it were half-asleep.

Then the breeze slipped away. The ball rose, wobbled, and drifted straight toward the palm’s crown. Reva ran until the sand squeaked under her heels. “Please,” she whispered, not to win, but because the game felt like home—her friends laughing, the sea clapping, the little boat rocking beyond the foam.

The palm bent its long neck, gently as a nod. One green frond tapped the ball back over the net. Four! Reva’s friends cheered so loudly the clouds seemed to smile. Ever since that golden evening, beach palms have leaned toward games, ready to nudge one more rally along. Next time you see their curved trunks, listen for the sea clapping: one, two, three, four.
