Beside the warm towel, Ansel lined up three scallop shells and waited for his cousin’s sailboat bell. The sea smelled like salt and green leaves, but the bell stayed quiet. Then fresh footprints appeared in the damp sand—small, round-toed, and leading away from his safe palm shade toward the curling water.
Ansel tucked one shell in his pocket and followed. The wet sand sucked at his heels with a shloop, shloop, stealing one sandal before he could hop free. At the last print, a conch shell rolled over by itself and hummed, “Share it.” Inside its pink curl, he heard the missing bell, bright as laughter.
He ran back barefoot, holding the conch high. When his cousin’s sail finally slipped into the cove, Ansel blew one note, and the palms, waves, and far hills seemed to answer. Next time you spot the footprints near the towel, see if they lead you to the joy too big to keep.
