Under shelves of corked jars and drying herbs, Cleo stirred her smallest cauldron until it went blip, blop, bleep. She wanted to brew enough giggles for the midnight broom race, where everyone got too serious about leaning left. The room smelled like mint, dust, and warm sugar. Cleo tapped a blue crystal over the bubbles and whispered, “One snort per sip, please.”
The potion swelled into pearl-sized bubbles. One popped and made a sound like a duck sneezing into a teacup. Cleo laughed so hard she nearly poured moon-syrup into her sleeve. Then the crystal in her wand laughed back. Not with a voice, exactly, but with bright tingles that zipped through the glass bottles, making their corks wiggle and their labels flutter.
A round bottle on the shelf rolled forward and bowed. “Finally,” it squeaked, “someone told the crystal’s favorite joke.” Cleo grinned and uncorked every empty bottle she could reach. The crystal giggled, the cauldron hiccuped, and each bottle caught a little joy for the racers. If you ever spot those sparkles near Cleo’s cauldron, count them carefully—one may be saving its best snort for you.
