Under her quilt-warm roof, Lottie tapped her wand on the windowsill. Ting, ting. “One moonbeam in my pocket before bedtime,” she whispered, and climbed onto the crescent waiting beside the chimney.
The moon rocked like a silver boat through cool, minty air. A cloud-whisper blocked the way, soft as pillow fluff and smelling of rain. “Payment,” it breathed. Lottie had only one cookie crumb, the crispy corner she had saved. She gave it up. The cloud sighed open, and a secret trail of tiny stars blinked out, one by one.
