Every day, Bree lined up last on the long blue mat and waited for Coach Mina’s whistle. Tweet meant stretch, tweet-tweet meant bars, and Bree kept her toes still even when the floor smelled like chalk dust and rubber. She wanted to carry the team’s parade card at meet time, but the card had vanished. One day, the whistle made a funny clack instead of a tweet.
Because of that, Coach Mina stopped practice and shook the whistle by its cord. Because of that, everyone heard a tiny papery rattle inside. Bree waited while the others guessed lockers, benches, and vault pads. Finally she whispered, “Try the whistle.” Coach popped it open, and out slid the folded parade card, crisp as a secret. When the team marched in, Bree held it high; next time you see the whistle above them, imagine the little clack waiting there.
