In the school hallway, the bulletin board smelled like glue sticks and fresh paper. Quilla stood on tiptoe with a purple crayon, waiting for her turn to add one star beside the class motto. The words were big and bubbly, and everyone had colored a little piece: a red heart, blue stars, yellow letters. Quilla hummed, “Tap-tap, wait-wait,” while the line shuffled like squeaky sneakers.
When the last star was colored, Mr. Pippin lifted the paper to hang it higher. Plop! A tiny folded note slipped from inside the round middle of the letter O. Nobody had looked there. Quilla opened it and read, “For the patient person: please announce the motto in your best dragon voice.” So she did. “YOU MATTER!” she roared, and the hallway giggled all the way to the drinking fountain.
