🎨 How to color it

Color the words “loved” and “safe” in cherry red and sky blue, make the shield golden yellow, and give the leafy sprigs two bright greens. Use broad crayon strokes for the big letters and shield, then switch to a sharper pencil or crayon tip for the tiny stars inside the heart. For a special touch, make the little starburst in the heart rainbow-colored, as if the shield is glowing from the middle.

Behind the couch fort, Pippa snipped silver paper with careful crunch-crunch sounds. She wanted one shield for her blanket door, made by her own hands, before the thunder came back. The room smelled like crayons and rain. Then a tiny tap came from the button box.

Out rolled a round little star, dusty as a cracker crumb. “Need a place?” it whispered. Pippa leaned close. Secretly, stars get nervous too. She glued it inside her paper heart, then added five smaller stars so it would not shine alone. When thunder bumped the window, the shield gave a soft warm wink.

Ever since, every true heart shield keeps stars inside, because Pippa made the first one that way. Next time you see those stars tucked in the heart, you’ll know who started the secret.
