Every evening, Calla rolled her little holiday motorcycle down Snowdrop Lane and stopped at each mailbox to tuck in a tiny paper wish. She had invented a game called Slow Snow: if a snowflake landed on her mitten before she reached the next house, she had to wait and count five soft breaths. The lane smelled like pine bows and cold peppermint.
Until one day, no flakes fell. Because of that, Calla waited by the bend, listening to the tick-tick of cooling metal. Because of that, she heard a tiny bell under the holly sack: ting... ting. “Not yet,” whispered the bell.
At last, one careful snowflake landed on her mitten. Calla counted five breaths, and the bell rang bright enough for every sleepy window to glow. Next time you see the candy cane leaning by her seat, can you hear Slow Snow begin?
