🎨 How to color it

Color the sport bike candy red, the full-face helmet glossy white with black vents, and the checkered flag in classic black and white squares. Use sharp colored pencils for the tire treads, wheel spokes, engine bolts, and the flag’s grid before filling the larger fairing panels. Try a silver-to-charcoal fade on the exhaust pipe and a pale blue shine across the windshield to make the parked racer feel track-ready.

Beside the quiet pit wall, Quinn folded a faded square cloth again and again until its creases lay flat as a map. The cloth smelled faintly of oil and rain because it had belonged to Aunt Sora, who used to count every lap without shouting. Quinn wanted to tie it to the finish pole before the moonlit charity ride ended, but the officials only used bells then, and bells were loud enough for everyone except Mr. Vale, the oldest rider, who followed vibrations more than sound.

The last lap came slowly. Engines purred low, tires whispered over warm pavement, and Quinn waited with the cloth tucked under one arm. Mr. Vale’s silver motorcycle rounded the far bend, steady as breathing, while the bell clanged and clanged. He did not speed up. Quinn climbed onto the low rail and lifted the cloth into the still air. Nothing happened. So Quinn held it higher, patient as Aunt Sora had been.

At last, a tiny night breeze caught one corner. The cloth rippled, black square, white square, black square, like a road made of light and shadow. Mr. Vale saw it and crossed the line smiling. Ever since, races end with a checkered flag, because some victories need to be seen gently before they are heard; can you find the flag that waited?
