🎨 How to color it

Color the sea turtle’s shell olive green with amber scute edges, make the speckled head and flippers sandy tan, and use teal sea grass with peach coral below. Because the shell plates and pebble-like flipper scales are small, use sharp colored pencils and fill one section at a time before shading the broad belly and background water. Try a pale blue wash behind the turtle, then leave the round bubbles white with just a silver-blue edge so they look full of light.

The story behind this coloring page

A ribbon of silver bubbles rose from the kelp meadow, and Sela followed it with slow, careful strokes. She wanted to know why some bubbles climbed straight up while others curled like question marks. The water tasted faintly of salt and crushed grass, and sunlight broke into coins across her shell. She drifted past branching coral, past tall blades that brushed her flippers with soft shh-shh sounds.

More bubbles appeared, not from the sand, but from nowhere she could see. They trembled in rings, spreading through the water like invisible music. Sela held still. A deep note rolled through her bones—oooom—and the bubbles answered it, gathering into bright dots and curving lines. They were not only bubbles. They were the shape of a whale’s song, rising where the singer had passed far beyond the meadow.

Sela swam beside the shining pattern until it loosened and lifted toward the sun. Her question had grown bigger instead of smaller, and she liked it that way. Next time you see the round bubbles above her, can you imagine which one is carrying that first deep note through the kelp meadow?
