Under the crescent moon, Tavi tied six small parcels into the practice sleigh and made himself a challenge: leave one at each lantern post before the last star faded. The runners hissed over the packed snow. Pine needles brushed his antlers with a cold, spicy smell as he stepped beyond the warm shed and onto the trail.
At the third post, a thin squeak came from a drift. Tavi stopped. Half-buried under snow sat a field mouse’s little sled, its twig handle snapped and its seed sack spilling like pepper. If he helped, he would miss moonset. Tavi nosed one parcel open, pulled out its red ribbon, and knotted the twig tight. “Good enough to glide,” he whispered. The mouse blinked up at him, too surprised to speak.
Tavi reached the last post late, with five parcels delivered and one ribbon gone. The moon had tipped behind the tallest fir, but his chest felt warmer than the shed ever had. Next time you spot the sleigh piled with presents, see if you can find the bundle that gave up its bow under the crescent moon.
