🎨 How to color it

Color the avocado skins deep green, the creamy middles pale yellow-green, the pit warm brown, and the heart fruit rosy red. Use chunky crayons or markers for the big avocado shapes, and don’t worry if little hands color over the tiny stars and dots. Try making the two leaves on the heart fruit different greens so it looks freshly sprouted.

Under the hushy garden lamp, Vera tucked one small seed into soft soil and patted it flat. She had made herself a little challenge: wait until the moon-dots blinked three times before peeking. Beside her, her round-pitted brother hummed, “Not yet,” while the dirt smelled cool and rainy.

Blink one. Blink two. Vera’s toes wiggled, but she waited. At blink three, a tiny red heart pushed up with two leaves, soft as bunny ears. The seed circle gave a happy shh-shh in the grass. Ever since, avocado friends keep a heart close when they grow, and if you peek between these two, you may find the first patient sprout.
