Under the softest cloud in Cloud Harbor, Fennel tucked a pearl button beneath his chin. It was his moon-button, smooth as a raindrop, and he wanted it close for the Dream Parade at midnight. But pffft-pffft went a chilly little wind through a crack beside the baby stars. Fennel opened one eye. No one else did. “I’ll be quick,” he whispered.
He padded past the crescent keeper, past six blinking stars, and pressed his button into the tiny hole. The wind stopped. The baby stars sighed warm silver onto his whiskers. Fennel had no button for the parade now, only cold paws and sleepy ears, but something soft followed him home: a moonbeam, round and quiet, settling by his cheek. By morning, nobody knew who mended the sky—unless you spot the caticorn curled on his cloud, keeping a secret as shiny as his borrowed moon button.
