Between the tall poppies and tickly grass, Tavvi tapped one hoof on a flat stone and announced her brand-new game: Nobody Step Where You Mean To. If she wanted the clover patch, she had to prance toward the daisies. If she wanted the stream path, she had to aim for the thistles. Her wings hummed like paper fans, and the meadow smelled of warm stems and crushed mint. “Perfectly impossible,” she said, which made it perfect.
Soon she was zigzagging in royal loops. A hop meant stop. A bow meant go. Every butterfly that fluttered past got a nonsense name: Picklewing, Sir Flap-a-Lot, Madam Spots. The clouds looked like they were holding in giggles, and even the sun seemed to peek over one white puff to watch Tavvi nearly salute a fern.
Then a monarch landed on her horn and pointed its tiny feet at the sky. From above, Tavvi’s silly wrong-way steps had drawn a huge spiral with a heart tucked in the middle. The butterflies had been following the pattern, not the rules. Tavvi snorted so hard a dandelion puff exploded. Next time you find her among the flowers, see if you can trace the secret heart where her perfectly impossible game began.
