At dusk, Elian set his plain brass ring on the sill before polishing the citrus window, as he had every solstice; the glass smelled faintly of peel oil, dust, and rain-warmed leaves. Circle by circle, the oranges and lemons caught the last light, and the ring answered with a small amber gleam, the same color as his mother’s marmalade spoon. Then the window did not brighten from outside, but from within: every slice held a remembered room, every leaf a road home. Elian stood among the glowing panes, exactly where the brass ring had always been returning.
