🎨 How to color it

Color the witch’s hat deep violet, her cape smoky blue, the broom straw golden yellow, and the swirling leaves pumpkin orange and maple red. Use chunky crayons or markers for the big cape and dress shapes, and don’t worry if little hands color outside the windblown lines. Try making the crescent moon pale lemon so it glows softly behind the clouds.

Under the windy orchard, Gilda tucked tiny wool scraps into empty bird nests. The air smelled like apples and rain, and leaves went skitter-skip over the grass. She wanted every nest to feel soft before the cold night came.

Up she swooped on her broom, cloak snapping like a sail. One leaf stuck to her sleeve. Another tapped her nose. Then a small crinkle came from the deepest pocket of her cape. Inside was a folded leaf, stitched with silver thread: “Thank you for the warm roofs.”

Gilda held it gently while the wind hummed low. “Nobody saw,” she whispered. But the orchard had. Next time you spot her flying through those tumbling leaves, see if one secret thank-you is still riding in her pocket.
