The seventh ring-note was supposed to hum under Quill’s tail, but only six soft tones circled Earth: mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm, mmm. Quill tucked his sparks close and slid out of his cozy star lane, where the dark smelled cold and clean like a tin cup of night. He wanted one clear note for the sky bell before moonrise. The price was small but prickly: every ring he crossed stole a fleck of his golden fire.
At the widest ring, a cloud no bigger than a mitt bumped his nose. “Psst,” it whispered, damp as fog on a window. “You’re listening from outside.” Quill blinked. Comets always rushed past; everyone knew that. Still, he curled inward, slower and slower, until Earth’s blue glow warmed his face and the clouds below made a hush like blankets being shaken.
Then he heard it—not a seventh note, but all the rings answering together because he had finally joined their circle. Quill carried that hush back, with fewer sparks and a fuller tail, and if you trace the rings from the smiling comet toward Earth, you may hear six soft tones become home.
