Every evening, Veyra crossed the glassy valley, tapping each bend of the road with her thornwood staff before the castle lamps answered one by one. She had just invented Castlelight, a game of waiting: hold one drop of bottled dawn until a cloud uncovers the moon, then move only when the silver touches your boots. Until one day, the moon snagged behind black-edged vapors and would not move.
Because of that, the road stayed dark and slick as river stone; because of that, the castle’s highest window began ringing like a spoon on crystal. Veyra’s cat hissed at the sound, but she kept still, palm warm around the little flask, counting her breaths while the wind smelled of ivy and rain. At the first thin blade of moonlight, she poured the dawn-drop onto the path.
Gold raced along every curve, up the castle walls, and into the waiting window. The bell-note broke into bright laughter, and Veyra took her next step only after the silver reached her boots.
