Every evening, Iris cut green glass for the winter window, letting the wheel hiss through oil and dust until her fingers knew each curve. One dusk, a stranger in a snow-bright coat laid a cracked golden star beside her lamp. Because of that, Iris recut the top panel by hand; because of that, every scrap of ruby, blue, and clear glass found a place around it, ornaments from pieces she had nearly swept away. “It fits,” she whispered. At dawn, the window held her breath back to her: green glass, oil scent, and the star she had made whole.
