Under the glass roof, Aster set one small challenge: touch every straight edge of the winter tree with his silver chalk before the last bell. The atrium smelled of cedar and cold stone. He climbed the quiet ladder, counting triangles, garland lines, and round lamp hooks, but he would not wake the top star yet. “Not until every angle is ready,” he whispered.
A soft tick-tick-tick drifted down. One paper snowflake, cut into eight careful points, had snagged on the highest branch. Aster waited while it turned in the pale light, slower than breath. When it finally settled against the star, each point matched an empty ray and the whole room shone warm gold.
Ever since, the star above a Christmas tree keeps many points, so no patient snowflake has to hurry. If you find the tallest star, can you see where the slow snowflake chose its place?
