🎨 How to color it

Layer the unicorn in pearl gray and soft ivory, the Gothic arch in weathered stone, the climbing roses in deep burgundy, and the crescent moon in antique gold. Use sharp pencils for the tiny quatrefoils, thorny vines, bat wings, and scrollwork, saving broader marker fills for the unicorn’s body and the open moon shapes. Try a cool blue-black glow behind the arch so the warm gold crescent and burgundy roses feel like a secret lit after midnight.

Behind the ruined chapel, where rain had left the stones smelling of iron and moss, Nerissa touched her horn to the closed gate and made herself a private bargain: one step through, one moon-rose clipped, then home before the bats finished their circle. No one had asked her to go. That was the difficult part, and the delicious part too, if I may tell you the secret.

The hinges complained softly. Her little ribbon bell snagged on a thorn and fell without ringing, which felt worse than noise. Nerissa nearly turned back, but the rose beyond the arch held a bead of silver light at its center, trembling like breath. “Only one,” she whispered, and the whisper steadied her knees. She crossed the threshold, took the fallen bell in her teeth instead of the flower, and carried it home under the crescent. By morning, the bell still would not ring, but Nerissa kept it anyway: proof of one step through the closed gate.
