🎨 How to color it

Color the crescent sun buttery yellow, the tall pines deep forest green, the cabin roofs brick red, and the layered mountains lavender-gray. Use sharp colored pencils for the stained-glass sections, filling one outlined pane at a time so the road, clouds, and tree boughs stay crisp. Try making the sky panes shift from pale peach near the sun to dusky blue around the curling clouds and tiny stars.

The story behind this coloring page

The Lantern No One Saw — Before the moon-sun touched the tallest pines, Orin tucked a single dry lantern wick into his coat. Read the full story →

Before the moon-sun touched the tallest pines, Orin tucked a single dry lantern wick into his coat. He only meant to fetch blue resin from the upper shed, enough to mend his cracked window before the night wind whistled through it again. The road smelled of cold sap and chimney smoke, and every step made the snow squeak softly under his boots.

Halfway up the bend, a traveler in a gray hood stood beside the path, holding an empty lantern. No one else was near; the cabins below had shut their shutters tight. Orin thought of his window, then of the long dark pass ahead. “Take mine,” he said, giving away the wick. The traveler bowed without a word, and the lantern bloomed gold against the mountain air.

Orin reached the shed with numb fingers and no light for the walk home, but inside he found resin shining on the wall like frozen honey. He patched his window by starlight, and the room grew quiet for the first time all winter. Next time you trace the winding road between the pines, see if you can keep Orin’s small gold secret before the moon-sun touches the tallest pines.
