Every evening, Cassian swept the tram depot floor for fallen bottle chips, ticket-window splinters, and one impossible shade of green. His challenge was simple: make a succulent window from scraps only, no purchases, no begging, no “borrowing” from the mayor’s fountain again. Then the depot cat knocked his careful spiral into the dust with a smug clink.
Because of that, Cassian rebuilt it backward, muttering as the rosette grew sharper, stranger, and much funnier than his plan. Because of that, the spare leaf pieces had to wander into curling vines around the edge, where they looked less like mistakes and more like applause. At dawn he soldered the last seam, smelling hot metal and old rain. “Fine,” he told the cat, “you may be the foreman.”
When sunlight hit, the handmade leaves flashed green across the empty tracks, crooked and glorious as his first swept-up shard.
