All morning, Nia carried a tiny yellow flag across the squeaky sand, past gull calls and salty wind. She did not plant it in the first hill she made, or the second. She patted each tower slowly with her scoop. “Not yet,” she told the flag, while foam hissed and slid away.
By lunch, the castle had a wide gate, two bumpy towers, and decorations pressed in with care. Nia finally pushed the flag beside it. The cloth snapped—whip-whip!—and a trail of glittery shell dust fluttered from its hem. Every puff of wind sprinkled the castle like beach fireworks.
