🎨 How to color it

Give the snorkeler’s mask aqua blue, the swim fins sunny yellow, the coral branches peach and lavender, and the little fish orange, teal, and lemon. Use sharp colored pencils for the many coral curls and bubble circles, then switch to broader strokes for the open water bands near the top. Try making the bubbles fade from pale blue to white so they look like they are floating up past the snorkel.

Every morning, Juno kicked slowly through Bubble Reef, counting three pops before the old prank bell rang: plip, plip, plip—nothing. The parrotfish snickered through coral that smelled salty and green. “Wait longer,” they burbled, which was exactly the sort of advice pranksters gave before hiding behind sea fans.

Until one day, Juno refused to chase their flicking tails. She floated still, fins wobbling, while warm light wiggled across the sand. Because of that, the nosiest fish grew bored and nibbled at a plain striped shell. Because of THAT, the shell sneezed out a tiny bell wrapped in seaweed, then rang so loudly a crab dropped his lunch.

Juno laughed bubbles into her snorkel. Finally, she tied the bell to the coral gate, where patient swimmers could hear it first and pranksters had to wait their turn. Next time you spot the little shell near the sandy bottom, keep quiet—maybe it is trying not to sneeze plip, plip, plip.
