🎨 How to color it

Try tangerine and golden yellow for the sunrise rays, turquoise and deep teal for the curling waves, sandy beige for the beach, and coral pink for the starfish. Use sharp colored pencils for the many narrow wave ribbons, following each swirl from its outside curve toward the center. For a magical touch, blend the sky from pale peach near the sun to soft blue behind the clouds, leaving the shell pearly white with lavender shadows.

Each dawn, before the gulls began their rusty cries, Orin walked the cool open shore and made himself a small challenge: leave one useful thing for the tide and never stay to see who took it. A twist of eelgrass for a crab. A smooth pebble beside a burrow. A little trench to guide stranded water back home. Then he would brush sand from his knees and go before the sun climbed free.

One morning, the sea broke its routine. The waves rolled in clear as green glass, curling and uncurling with silver whispers, and every gift Orin had ever left seemed to return in motion: a crab tugged eelgrass into a doorway, minnows flashed through his old trench, and a shell he had set upright held a sip of light. Because he stopped to watch, the tide reached his toes; because the cold foam made him laugh, he forgot to hide.

At last Orin placed one more gift where nobody had asked for it: he turned a stranded starfish gently toward the wet sand and stepped back. The sun lifted, gold spilling across the water, and the waves carried their quiet thanks without a single witness—unless you can find the starfish still pointing toward the dawn.
