🎨 How to color it

Color the graduate’s gown deep navy, the cap matching blue, the diploma creamy ivory, and the swirling star arch in gold and silver. Use sharp colored pencils for the small stars on the collar and hem, then fill the broad gown panels with smooth, even strokes. Try a soft lavender-to-pale-blue glow behind the arch so the gold stars feel like they are shining after the ceremony.

The velvet curtains smelled of dust and lemon polish as Cale held his rolled certificate with both hands and waited under the empty arch. Tucked inside the ribbon was a tiny paper crane his sister had folded from his first failed math quiz. He wanted to step onto the stage only when the brass bell rang once for his name, but the bell stayed quiet. Above him, the wooden stars hung dull as crackers.

“Just one more minute,” whispered Ms. Vale from the wings. The hall ticked and settled. Cale’s shoes pressed the warm floorboards; he counted the slow taps of rain on the roof instead of the impatient thumps in his chest. Then the paper crane rustled. Its folded beak pointed up, not to the biggest star, but to the smallest one near the side curl.

Cale lifted his certificate toward it. The little star blinked gold, then another, then every star in the arch answered in a gentle chain of light. Ever since, graduation stars wait for the person who has waited longest, so patience can have its own bright turn; next time you see the smallest side star, see if it is still listening for rain.
