Under the school observatory dome, Tavi tapped the lunchbox lid twice—plink, plink—then slid into his usual scouting route between the rice hill and the curly rolls. He wanted to map every compartment before the telescope bell rang. Sesame smelled nutty in the warm air, and the tomatoes shone like tiny red helmets ready for launch.
Past the flower bites, the pea pods began to fizz. Not steam, not sauce—fizz, like soda whispering through leaves. Tavi leaned close. A star-shaped carrot winked, spun once, and said, “Gate opening!” Suddenly the lunchbox was not a lunchbox at all, but a spaceport where broccoli clouds marked landing pads and roll spirals showed safe paths home.
Tavi raised one little arm and drew the route in sauce dots: pea pod, star gate, rice moon, tomato beacon. The telescope bell rang above them, bright and silver, and everyone blasted off exactly nowhere, because lunch-space was best when it stayed close enough to smell like sesame. Next time you spot the smiling scout near the spiral rolls, can you find the gate that fizzed first—plink, plink?
