Under the copper roof of the comet bakery, ovens puffed cinnamon steam while fruit teams rolled into their places. Rowan the raspberry held a tiny crumb compass against his seeds and practiced one brave bounce toward the Star-Tart Circle. He wanted to join the first grand spin before the midnight comet crossed the skylight. The compass looked like an ordinary toast crumb, but it had belonged to every raspberry in his row who had dared a new ring.
Peach moons slid around the crust. Lemon wedges opened like little fans. Blueberries chimed plink-plink into the middle, and a cool mint sprig brushed Rowan’s cheek. “Ready?” whispered a lime wedge. Rowan bounced once, twice, then tucked himself between two bright berries, right where the compass pointed.
Then the skylight filled with silver. The crumb did not point north at all—it pointed to crumbs of starlight hidden in the sugared crust. As the tart turned, every slice became a comet path, every berry a bright stop in the sky. Rowan laughed so hard his seeds shook. Next time you spot the tiny berries circling the tart, can you find the brave place where one crumb compass joined the stars?
