Under the tickle-grass, Milo tied three balloon strings to his wrist and tucked a tiny present beneath his chin. He had invented Secret Cheer: follow the floating clue, find one happy sound, and bring it back before the party hat slipped sideways. The first balloon tugged him past the safe flower clearing into the whispery pine gap, where the air smelled like sap and cold cake frosting.
At the creek, a reed-bird would not sing unless Milo gave it the silver ribbon from his present. Snip-snip went the bow. In return, the bird whistled a tune so bright it seemed to sparkle in his ears. “That’s too big for just me,” Milo whispered. He hurried home with a plain little box, three bobbing balloons, and a secret song bursting in his chest.
When the others gathered, Milo opened the box. Out flew the reed-bird’s whistle, bouncing from balloon to balloon until every fox paw tapped. If you can spot the party hat leaning over his grin, you may hear where Secret Cheer began under the tickle-grass.
