Every afternoon, after the sun warmed the cliff grass, Vesper tapped three safe stones with her hoof and played Crystal Dash. The rule was simple: tap, listen, race to the echo before it faded. Ping! Pung! Paaang! She never chased sounds past the bright entrance of the glow caves, where the air smelled like wet pennies and cold rain.
Until one day, an echo answered back with a tiny sneeze of smoke. Because of that, Vesper stepped inside farther than any Dash had ever gone, her wings brushing slick stone. Because of that, the crystals began ringing all around her—high, low, wild—until she could not tell which sound was hers. Then a small dragon popped from behind a yellow crystal and whispered, “I’m stuck in your game.”
Vesper’s knees went fizzy, but she tapped one clear note on the tallest crystal. The dragon tapped a smoky claw in reply. Together they made a trail of pings through the maze until daylight spilled over their hooves and scales. Next time you see their noses almost meeting, listen closely: the first brave ping of Crystal Dash may still be hiding there.
