Under the apple trees, Vesper set out three heart cookies, one star cookie, and the blue teapot that smelled like honey steam. She meant to follow the tiny crumb trail across the blanket as far as it wished to go, because every crumb seemed to point somewhere new. The grass whispered against the blanket’s corners, and the sun warmed the rim of her cup.
The trail looped around the plate, skipped past the sugar mug, and stopped at the plainest teacup—the one nobody had used. Vesper lifted it. Inside, tucked where tea should have been, lay a folded paper flower no bigger than a petal. When she opened it, a map of the whole picnic appeared in dots: cookie, teapot, apple tree, cloud, her own curious hoof.
Then the dots began to move. They were not a map of where things were, but where questions wanted to wander next. Vesper sipped her tea slowly while the paper flower pointed toward the cup, the cookie, the smiling sun, and back again; next time you see the tiny teacup, can you guess which question ran away first?
