🎨 How to color it

Color the umbrella panels lemon yellow and sky blue, the rain boots cherry red, the puddles pale aqua, and the garden flowers pink and orange. Use a sharp colored pencil for the umbrella ribs, scalloped edge, boot buckles, and tiny flower petals before filling the larger panels with marker. Try making every smiling raindrop a slightly different blue, as if the clouds are sharing a whole pocket of rainy-day colors.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Umbrellas Smile in Rain — Under the soft pat-pat of afternoon rain, Sula carried a striped measuring straw from puddle to puddle. Read the full story →

Under the soft pat-pat of afternoon rain, Sula carried a striped measuring straw from puddle to puddle. She wanted the garden path to stay passable before the moon snails came out for their slow parade. But the clouds kept sighing silver drops, and the puddles spread over the stepping stones with a cold, wobbly shine.

At the last puddle, Sula found two yellow boots standing empty, toes touching like they were keeping a secret. She waited, because rushing made ripples lie. Drip, drip, drip. When the water grew still, a tiny click sounded under one boot heel. “What was that?” Sula whispered. She lifted the boot and found a folded umbrella no bigger than a leaf, tucked where nobody ever checked.

Sula opened it carefully. The little canopy bloomed above the puddle, caught the falling drops, and bent them into neat circles instead of splashes. The garden path held firm. The moon snails slid through, leaving pearly trails. Ever since, umbrellas smile when rain falls, because they remember the patient puddle, the hidden click, and the soft pat-pat of afternoon rain.
