Every afternoon, Talon made the gadget lab clang like a playground. He tapped one button, ducked one robot arm, and shouted, “Switchback!” before the wall screens could blink from green to yellow. The game had one rule: tag the glowing panel, then trade places with the next machine before the buzzer snarled.
One day, he added a mystery switch under the left console. When he pressed it, the pipes thumped overhead, two claw arms snapped awake, and every monitor drew arrows toward the tall cooling tower. Because of that, the floor lights chased Talon into the center aisle. Because of that, his new cape caught a warm gust from the vent and pulled him one wobbly step closer to the whirring claws.
His mouth tasted like pennies. Still, Talon lifted one finger and whispered, “My turn.” He tagged the air sensor, spun under the first claw, and touched the tower’s reset dial just as the buzzer barked. The lab sighed, smelling of hot dust and orange sparks. Next time you spot his raised hand, that is the exact moment the game waited to see if Talon would say, “Switchback.”
