Every day after breakfasting on salty seagrass, Niko raced along the safe side of Shellback Reef and tapped one flipper against each blue current ribbon. One, two, three, four—then he always turned back before the fifth, where the water hissed through the coral pass like shaken soda.
Until one day, Niko set himself a small challenge: touch the fifth ribbon before the shadow of the parrotfish crossed the sand. He pushed hard, shell buzzing with speed. Because of that, the current grabbed his front flippers and spun him past striped fish and prickly coral horns. Because of that, he lost sight of the seagrass meadow and heard only pop-pop-pop bubbles rising from a crack below.
“Follow the tiny ones,” he whispered, tasting cold mineral water. The smallest bubbles slipped through an arch in the reef, and Niko tucked his flippers close, scraped past velvet-soft sponge, and burst into open blue. Behind him, the fifth ribbon curled like a flag. If you trace the bubbles through the coral pass, can you find the brave way Niko came through?
