Every night, Juno clicked one tiny note over each pumpkin row and tried to count her wingbeats without losing her place. The pumpkin valley smelled of dry leaves and cold dirt, and the vines below curled like question marks in the silver light.
Until one night, a hundred other bats poured over the hills, chittering so brightly that Juno’s count scattered. Because of that, she flew lower, tracing the crooked fence for a quiet line. Because of that, she heard something odd: the pumpkins gave back a hollow thump after every seventh wingbeat, soft as a drum under a blanket.
Juno stopped counting herself and counted the field instead. Seven beats, thump. Seven beats, thump. At last, she led the swarm in wide circles until every bat heard the hidden rhythm rolling from pumpkin to pumpkin. “It’s answering us,” she whispered. Next time you see all those wings above the vines, try to find where Juno’s tiny note became the moonbeat.
