At the first hush of evening, Tavi eased the number 7 car along the downtown circuit, not to pass anyone, but to follow a fleck of light blinking between the towers. The tires whispered shh-shh over the painted lane lines, and warm pavement smelled faintly of rain and rubber. Every curve made the glimmer slip behind another glass wall, as if the city were winking one window at a time.
By the tire stacks, Tavi slowed enough to hear the chain-link fence tick in the breeze. The glimmer was not on the road, not in the grandstand signs, not on the polished nose of the car. It swung high above the bend from the hook of a quiet construction crane: a tiny glass prism, catching the low sun and scattering seven colors onto the empty track.
“Race me, rainbow?” Tavi whispered. The prism answered by laying a soft stripe across the next curve, and the car followed it gently, lap after lap, until the skyscrapers seemed less like walls and more like lanterns. Next time you trace that high crane over the street circuit, see if you can find where Tavi’s runaway curiosity first turned into color.
