Every day before sunrise, Nori padded around the mountain shrine and tapped his cracked bell charm against each stone step: tink, tink, tink. The bell looked like a dented acorn on a string, but it had belonged to his shy little brother, who said it could “wake up brave paws.” Nori never rang it loudly. He only checked that the paper charms stayed tied to the gate and that the pine needles smelled sharp and sleepy.
Until one day, a crow in a festival mask swooped down and swapped every charm for silly ones that read SNEEZE, BURP, and PLEASE BOW TO THE MOSS. Because of that, visitors would ask the moss for directions. Because of that, the shrine foxes would laugh so hard they’d forget the noon blessing. Nori’s ears burned. The crow dangled the real charms from the highest rope and cawed, “Ring for help, fluff-stack!”
Nori swallowed. The cracked bell felt cool against his paw. Finally, he gave it one bright jangle—tink-CLANG! Wind rushed through his nine tails, snapping the true charms back into place and flipping the crow’s mask upside down. If you spot the dangling tags by the gate, one may still remember the morning Nori’s brave paws went tink, tink, tink.
