🎨 How to color it

Color the mermaid’s tail in teal and sea-glass green, her flowing hair in pale lavender, the pine trees in deep forest green, and the waterfall in icy blue. Use sharp colored pencils for the small tail scales and hair strands, then switch to light side-strokes for the wide night sky and calm lake rings. Try a silver-to-navy gradient around the crescent moon so the stars look as if they are waking one by one.

The story behind this coloring page

Why Moon Lilies Glow — Under the pine-shadow cliffs, Elowen rubbed the little pearl button she wore on a cord. Read the full story →

Under the pine-shadow cliffs, Elowen rubbed the little pearl button she wore on a cord. It had fallen from her mother’s festival shawl, and she wanted to keep it dry, safe, and close. But the mountain lake had gone dim; even the waterfall sounded hushed, like cloth sliding over stone.

A white lily beside the rock stayed folded tight. Elowen had never touched a sleeping moon lily before. Her fingers trembled in the cold water. “Just a little light,” she whispered. The pearl button warmed against her palm, smelling faintly of salt and home. She pressed it into the lily’s center, and the petals opened with a soft plink.

Moonlight poured out, gentle as milk. One lily brightened, then another, until a path shimmered across the dark water. Ever since that night, moon lilies glow when the sky forgets its lamp; and if you study the lily pads near Elowen’s tail, you may spot the first brave bloom.
