🎨 How to color it

Color the crossing guard’s uniform navy blue, the cone bright orange, the school bus sunny yellow, and the children’s backpacks red and green. The large uniform panels and crosswalk stripes are great for chunky crayons or markers, while the badge and belt pockets can be filled slowly with a sharper pencil. Try giving the guard’s raised glove a warm golden outline, like the morning sun is saying hello too.

In the hush before school, Elena held a tiny silver bell from her mother’s old lunch cart and rang it once—ting! She wanted every child to hear that bright little hello, but the bus brakes sighed, shoes scuffed, and the bell’s song disappeared under the city rumble.

So Elena lifted her empty hand high instead. “This hello is bigger,” she said softly. The children smiled and stepped across the white stripes. One boy waved back, then a girl, then the bus driver, until joy bounced from hand to hand like sunshine on windows.

Ever since, crossing guards raise a big open palm at busy corners: it means stop, it means safe, and it means a hello big enough to share. Next time you see Elena’s hand up by the bus, can you find the tiny bell that started the wave?
