Every morning before the sun warmed the round sea-roof, Tula chased the dawn current between coral fans, waving kelp, and silver fish. She wanted to reach the Great Blue Loop before the big waves folded over, but the current always slipped ahead with a hiss and a sparkle.
Until one day, a tiny lanternfish bumped her nose, blinking green-gold in the dim water. “The current forgot its song!” he squeaked. Because of that, Tula swam past the usual reef and into a tunnel of bubbles that tickled her fins. Because of THAT, the waves above began drumming—boom, splash, boom—and every fish turned to follow her humming.
At last Tula opened her mouth and sang the tune she had heard each morning in the water’s pull. The current curled around her like a ribbon, quick and sure, carrying the whole school into the Great Blue Loop. Next time you spot the smiling whale beneath those waves, see if you can find the tiny messenger who showed her where she belonged.
