🎨 How to color it

Color the vampire’s cape deep burgundy, the arched stone doorway cool slate gray, the climbing roses dark crimson, and the chandelier antique gold. Use sharp colored pencils for the rose vines and tiny window tracery, then switch to broader strokes for the cape panels and wooden doors. Try a faint blue-gray shadow behind the vampire so the red roses and burgundy cape feel even more dramatic.

Every night, Dorian set himself one daring little challenge before opening the west door: count thirteen roses in the thorny vines without touching a single thorn. The cloister smelled of wet stone and candle smoke, and the chandelier above him ticked with warm wax drops. He had reached twelve many times. Until one night, the thirteenth rose winked from a carved corner high in the arch—and vanished.

Because of that, Dorian climbed the cold stone ledge to follow it, cape snapping like a sail. Because of that, the three round windows over the door began to turn, grinding softly: clack, clack, clack. The vines curled aside, the keyhole breathed out silver dust, and a voice inside the wood whispered, “No guessing.”

Dorian grinned and counted again, faster now: one on the pillar, two by the bat, three tucked under the cracked arch. At thirteen, he spoke the number, not the answer, and the door boomed open to a staircase lit with green fire. Next time you spot the thirteenth rose, don’t blink—the challenge may start again under the ticking drops of wax.
