🎨 How to color it

Give the dog's thick coat a warm cream, the rolling hills a soft spring green, the sheep a cloudy white, and the meadow flowers sunny yellow. Use sharp colored pencils for the many fur strokes on the chest, tail, and legs, following the direction each tuft already takes. Try a pale blue-to-lavender sky behind the clouds so the cream-colored dog feels bright against the cool distance.

Across the high pasture, Orlo carried the morning in his nose: wet grass, sheep wool, and the peppery smell of tiny white flowers. He padded from tuft to tuft, listening for the little hollow sound he had heard at sunrise. It came again—hoo, hoo—soft as breath blown through a shell. The sheep kept cropping clover, and the hills rolled away in green folds.

Orlo climbed a bump of earth and lifted his head. “Who’s calling?” he asked, though his voice came out only a gentle woof. The sound answered from nowhere and everywhere: hoo, hoo, woof. A cloud slid over the far ridge, shaped almost like a sheep with a long, woolly back.

Then Orlo understood the pasture was not empty space between fences. The hills were bowls, the clouds were listeners, and every bark came back wearing a new coat. He stood very still while the sheep chewed and the flowers trembled. If you follow his gaze into the far hills, you might catch the next answer before it fades: hoo, hoo, woof.
