🎨 How to color it

Give the dragon emerald green scales, smoky lavender wing membranes, warm gray cathedral stone, and deep crimson roses along the courtyard edge. Use sharp colored pencils for the small scale rows, rose petals, and narrow Gothic tracery, working from the outer edges toward the center. Try a golden glow inside the tall arch behind the dragon so its horns and raised wings look lit by hidden cathedral lanterns.

Past the gargoyle gutters and iron rain chains, Velric padded into the cloister with his claws tucked tight. He wanted to press one talon to the rose gate before the midnight bells, just once, the way the old dragons did at naming time. The stone smelled of rain and cold lilies, and every pointed arch seemed to lean closer as his wings brushed the carved walls.

A silver tick-tick-tick came from the roses. Velric froze, then bent low. A cricket made of blue glass stepped onto a thorn, its legs chiming like tiny spoons. “Not the gate first,” it sang. “Breathe first.” Velric’s first brave breath came out small and warm, curling around the roses instead of scorching them.

The twist was in the sound: the cricket was not warning him at all. It was tuning him. When Velric touched the rose gate, the whole cloister answered—arches humming low, spires ringing high, roses trembling open with sparks of dew. Next time you find his claws among the flowers, can you hear that first brave breath under the iron rain chains?
